Light, airy, and delicately sweet â Chantilly cream has conquered taste buds around the world. But did you know that beyond its name, this famous whipped cream is also a real experience to enjoy in Chantilly? And it starts just steps away from La Maison du 18âŠ
A Bit of History⊠and a Touch of Legend
Popular legend (especially after the film Vatel starring GĂ©rard Depardieu) claims that the famous courtier invented Chantilly cream one evening out of desperation, lacking eggs for a proper mayonnaise. A good story, but not quite trueâŠ

In fact, François Vatel was the majordomo of the Prince of CondĂ© â more of a maĂźtre dâhĂŽtel than a cook. He certainly didnât invent the cream that bears the name of Chantilly today.
Food historian Pierre Leclercq traced the origins of sweetened whipped cream back to England in 1545, where a recipe referred to it as âmilk snow.â It spread across Europe during the Italian Renaissance, long before being associated with Chantilly.
It wasnât until the 18th century that the name âChantilly creamâ began appearing. In 1784, the Baroness of Oberkirchdescribed the festive banquets held at the Hameau of the chĂąteau and mentioned this exquisite cream served on such occasions. From there, the name stuck â and went global.
